“This is a great time to have this award and be doing this project to celebrate the architecture of it, because the building today looks great,” said Carson Assistant City Manager John Raymond. And that building was among eight structures recently selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a recipient of its 2023 Conserving Black Modernism grants, a program that honors the works of Black architects. Robert Kennard, who was part of the second generation of African American architects, helped design Carson City Hall. The seat of Carson’s municipal government has been recognized by a national historic preservation organization via a program that seeks to address the historical omission of black architects. Carson City Hall opened nearly 50 years ago, with the help of a trailblazing African American architect - and now, that building has been tapped for historic preservation.
